Ben Nelms at The Citizen in Fayette County reported that the radical Human Rights Campaign has infiltrated Fayette County public schools. Parents packed a Fayette Board of Education meeting on June 19 to express their concerns about LGBT propaganda, especially about “transgender” issues, but neither the superintendent nor the board members provided the answers they sought.
The dispute is about a training session given to Fayette school nurses to teach them how to talk to children as young as first-graders about gender issues. Nelms quoted Superintendent Dr. Joseph Barrow (Georgia’s 2017 Superintendent of the Year) as saying, “Recently our school nurses received an introduction to ‘Understanding Gender and Supporting Transgender Students.’ A representative from the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition, who is also a Welcoming Schools facilitator, conducted the presentation.”
So what qualifies the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition (GSSC) to conduct public-school employee training? According to the organization’s website, GSSC’s purpose “is to eliminate LGBTQ oppression in Georgia schools. We educate and advocate on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students and families.” GSSC targets “various systems of oppression, understanding that one cannot eradicate transprejudice and heterosexism without simultaneously working to end all forms of injustice.”
Did Dr. Barrow review this website and think, “Ah, yes, just what Fayette parents want – eradication of transprejudice and heterosexism”? Or did he not bother to vet the organization he was partnering with?
Perusing the GSSC website turns up some troubling material. For example, a PowerPoint presentation for school counselors urges that the entire school environment be tailored to support LGBTQQ students (the Qs, we think, are for “queer” and “questioning”). The presenter instructs counselors to “refer to the positive aspect of being gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered” when meeting with students who think they fall in to one of those categories. He also urges purchase of pro-LGBTQQ library materials and advises counselors to “begin implementing curriculum modifications” in courses such as English and history. So all students, not just those struggling with these issues, should be indoctrinated to accept the GSSC worldview.
But back to the Fayette nurse training. The GSSC trainer was also a facilitator with “Welcoming Schools,” which pushes the alarm meter to a whole new level. “Welcoming Schools” is a project of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the nation’s largest radical organization devoted to mainstreaming LGBT agendas. Having achieved redefinition of marriage and demonization of anyone who disagrees, HRC has now advanced to the inevitable next step of obliterating the concept of biological sex. “Welcoming Schools” is the vehicle by which it teaches young children to accept this assault on reality.
An open-records request to the Fayette County Schools produced the handouts given to the nurses. Four pages list definitions for terms such as cisgender, genderqueer, heteronormative, pansexual, transgender, and Drag Queen. The fifth shows a cute cartoon drawing of the “Gender Unicorn,” which has been used in some schools to encourage children to color in symbols showing their preferred “gender identity,” “gender expression,” “sex assigned at birth,” and to whom they’re “physically/emotionally attracted.”
Dr. Barrow insisted this isn’t part of the curriculum. Rather, he said, “We want our employees to be equipped to provide the appropriate support for the physical, mental, and the overall educational well-being of all of our children.”
“Appropriate support.” If GSSC and HRC are defining that term, any child who struggles with gender identity will be encouraged in his confusion and assisted in pretending to be a member of the opposite sex. Not long ago this was basically a non-issue, since statistically speaking very few people suffered from gender dysphoria (transgenderism). But after years of propaganda from outfits like GSSC and HRC, transgenderism has become a fad – and according to many frantic parents, even a cult that’s sucking in thousands of children and youth.
The American College of Pediatricians is blunt about this approach: “Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse.” Dr. Paul McHugh, former chief psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, is also outspoken about the madness of normalizing gender dysphoria in children. McHugh points out that this condition is psychological, not physical, and should be treated as such:
[G]ender dysphoria . . . belongs in the family of
similarly disordered assumptions about the body, such as anorexia
nervosa . . . . Its treatment should not be directed at the body as
with surgery and hormones any more than one treats obesity-fearing
anorexic patients with liposuction.
According to McHugh, the vast majority of children suffering from gender dysphoria will outgrow it. Resorting to bodily mutilation doesn’t seem to solve the underlying psychological problems, as evidenced by the alarmingly high suicide rate among such patients. “What is needed now,” he writes, “is public clamor for coherent science – biological and therapeutic science – examining the real effects of these efforts to ‘support’ transgendering.”
The chances that the GSSC facilitator mentioned any of this to the school nurses are approximately zero. Fayette parents can only hope the nurses will ignore the propaganda and rely instead on their own medical training and common sense. But some school officials seem more interested in political correctness – even if it harms the children they supposedly want to help. The question is, how many other Georgia school systems are following the same agenda?
